Philippines promoting new shipbuilding base

Philippine officials are preparing the Cagayan Freeport in the far south of the Philippines as the countrys next large shipyard.

Several shipbuilders have expressed interest in the expansion plans of the 54,000-hectare business hub in Port Irene, Sta. Ana.

Cagayan Economic Zone Authority (CEZA) Deputy Administrator Jose Aldeguer said the construction of the shipyard was likely to commence this year as soon as a breakwater to fortify Port Irene’s shoreline is completed.
