LR launches flexible stowage application

Lloyd’s Register has launched RouteFlex to help containership operators optimise cargo capacity amid changing routes and weather conditions

Lloyd’s Register has launched LR RouteFlex, a new application designed to help containership operators improve cargo capacity and operational flexibility as unpredictable conditions increasingly disrupt voyages.

The application responds to growing uncertainty across container shipping, where extreme weather, geopolitical events, port congestion and route diversions are making traditional voyage planning harder.

“Optimal stowage is no longer just about maximising capacity,” said Nick Gross, Global Containerships Segment director at Lloyd’s Register.

“It is about flexibility, resilience and the ability to adapt safely when conditions change.”

LR RouteFlex uses metocean datasets across trading regions to provide dynamic, route-based stowage optimisation. Operators can optimise stowage stack by stack and leg by leg, allowing them to assess weather-dependent factors throughout an individual voyage.

Historically, stowage optimisation has focused primarily on maximising carrying capacity for a predetermined route. However, unexpected diversions and changing operational conditions can quickly make those assumptions outdated, potentially requiring cargo arrangements to be reassessed.

RouteFlex’s route deviation capability allows operators to recalculate weather-dependent factors following a diversion, while route splitting enables individual voyage legs to be optimised separately.

Gross said the application would help operators understand the implications of route changes quickly and make informed decisions while keeping cargo within safe operational limits.

Hasan Ocakli, global head of technology – Hull Structures at Lloyd’s Register, said the combination of weather-dependent factors with route splitting and deviation features offered ‘unprecedented flexibility in stowage planning’.

He added that the technology could allow operators to avoid applying worst-case weather assumptions across an entire voyage, potentially unlocking additional cargo capacity and turning unavoidable diversions into an operational advantage.

LR RouteFlex can operate as a standalone application, through LR’s LashRightUX software or via integration with approved third-party lashing software. It also supports online and offline operation for crews and shore-based teams.
