Wärtsilä NH3 FSS order for EXMAR gas carriers
Wärtsilä Gas Solutions has announced that it will deliver the fuel supply system for two new gas carriers that will operate with ammonia fuel. The EXMAR LPG medium-size gas carriers will be the first oceangoing vessels to be propelled by dual-fuel engines capable of operating with ammonia.

EU Backs efuels Retrofit for Bulker
A bulk carrier is to be converted to run on next-generation fuels under an EU-sponsored initiative aimed at accelerating international shipping’s decarbonisation. The EUR17m ($18.2m) GAMMA collaborative project, named in reference to usage of ‘green’ ammonia and (bio)methanol, will see a 62,000dwt Ultramax bulker retrofitted with new technologies.

Cargo handling and FSS contract for VLAC series
Babcock LGE has been awarded the contract to supply the cargo handling system and the fuel supply system for a series of six Very Large Ammonia Carriers (VLAC) on order at an unnamed shipyard in China. The contract relates to an order for a VLAC series for an Asian shipowner.

DNV has granted approval in principle (AIP) to a design for an ammonia-fuelled 3,5000 container vessel, developed by a consortium including the classification society, the Singapore-based liner operator ONE and Nihon Shipyard Co., Ltd. (NSY).

Japanese Consortium Targets 2026 For First NH3-Fuelled Gas Carrier
Japan Engine Corporation (J-ENG) has announced that it will provide a low-speed two-stroke dual-fuel engine capable of operating on ammonia for an ammonia-fuelled medium-sized gas carrier, which will be constructed at Nihon Shipyard. A series of contracts relating to the construction of the 40,000 cbm ammonia carrier were signed in December 2023 by J-ENG, Nihon Shipyard Co., Ltd. and ship owner Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (NYK).

First successful demonstration of onboard ammonia-H2 cracking
The successful operation of an ammonia to hydrogen cracker was successfully demonstrated on 18 November on an offshore supply vessel operated by Zumaia Offshore in the Bay of Biscay, according to a project participant. The demonstration was the first of its kind to be concluded, the participants claim.

Corvus participates in EU APOLO ammonia cracker project
A EU-led project to bring forward the introduction of ammonia cracking technology connected with a PEM fuel cell into the marine industry has been awarded funding from the EU’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation fund. The project, which is focused on large deepsea vessels with an engine capacity of 1-10MW, is also intended to evaluate a novel ammonia engine capable of running on an ammonia/hydrogen blend of fuels.
