STN Atlas Elektronik has completed installation of new VTS facilities for the Customs authority at Shenzhen, the South China Sea coastal city north of Hong Kong, under a contract worth $400,000. Designed to monitor and help avert unauthorised local border crossings and smuggling activities, the system comprises a remote-sited Atlas X-band 9750 radar and associated track processor facilities which are in turn linked to two 21-inch traffic display workstations at the Customs office and its ancillary control station. Both workstations provide continuous monitoring operations while also allowing high-resolution record and replay functions. Atlas says the system is expected to be connected to a more extensive monitoring network at a later stage. The Shenzhen system is the latest of a series of VTS installations in China carried out by Atlas following its recent commissioning of a radar data processing and training facility at Dalian Maritime University. This is used for the training of Chinese VTS operators and maintenance personnel.
