K Line Port Service Co. has completed a successful test voyage using next-generation biodiesel fuel on a tugboat.
On 10 May the tugboat Aihomaru completed its voyage in Nagoya Port in Japan using fuel made from waste cooking oil supplied by Toyotsu Energy Corporation. The fuel was bunkered ship-to-ship.
Biodiesel fuel can be used without changing the specifications of existing marine diesel engines by blending with heavy fuel oil as a drop-in fuel. The fuel has been defined as carbon neutral in the IPCC guidelines.
In its Environmental Vision 2050 – Blue Seas for the Future guidelines, K Line Group aims to halve CO2 emissions by 2030 compared with 2008 figures, exceeding the IMO’s 40% target.
The group aims to fully decarbonise by 2050.
