German coalition simulates remote tug navigation operation

A German-funded project, FernSAMS, is carrying out research that could lead to the development of a remotely operated tug fleet

A coalition has successfully conducted a manoeuvre simulation of a tugboat during the 12th National Maritime Conference in Rostock on 10 May. The simulation forms part of a German government supported project to investigate the use of remote-controlled tugs during mooring and casting-off manoeuvres of large ships.
