Alang ship-breaking to be upgraded
Japan and the Gujarat government in India have joined up to upgrade the Alang ship-breaking yard in Bhavnagar.
The two partiers have signed a MoU which focuses on technology transfer and financial assistance from Japan to upgrade the yard at Alang to international standards. The MoU includes construction and operation of a common hazardous waste removal pre-treatment facility, modernisation of recyclable goods market and development of human resources.
Japan will also address environmental aspects of Alang besides devising a strategy to market it in challenging conditions. The government plans to make Alang the largest IMO compliant ship recycling yard.
