The fuel and technology choices facing ship owners ahead of the IMO’s 2020 global sulphur cap were in focus on the first day of The Motorship’s Propulsion & Emissions Conference in Hamburg.

Keynote presentations from Stefan Micallef, director of the IMO’s marine environment division, and Ole Graa Jakobsen, vice president head of fleet technology, Maersk Line, set the context of discussions early. Jakobsen noted that the company – the world’s largest container ship owner – will focus on complying with low-sulphur fuel rather than scrubbers.

That approach contrasted with that of other ship owners joining an operator panel in the morning – including Carnival Corp, Hapag-Lloyd and Mitsui OSK Lines. Throughout the day, The Motorship Live kept delegates and a worldwide audience up to date with highlights.
