Sweden-based fuel cell supplier PowerCell Sweden AB has signed a contract with an undisclosed leading European shipyard regarding the development and delivery of a 3MW marine fuel cell system.

The project will develop and deliver a liquid hydrogen (LH2)-fuelled fuel cell system based on several of the company’s S3 PEM fuel cell system modules connected in parallel. The project will run over three years.

The identity of the European shipyard could not be disclosed. The project itself has not been announced.

The project will connect the company’s S3 fuel cell modules, PowerCell confirmed. Unlike PowerCell's S2 cells, which can use a reformer and process residual hydrogen, the S3 fuel cell requires pure hydrogen.

The total value of the contract for the period amounts to SEK77 million (EUR 6.9 million) and covers both the development and delivery costs of the project.

In November, The Motor Ship reported that PowerCell had joined a consortium led by Havyard developing a 3.2MW LH2-fuelled project for Norwegian coastal ferry operator Havila.
