The central transitional role of LNG in maritime shipping is now well established, and addressing the challenge of its incomplete combustion is under the spotlight in a keynote speech at this year’s Propulsion & Future Fuels Conference.
Methane slip — and its regulatory compliance under EU ETS and FuelEU Maritime requirements — will come under the expert eye of Dr. Fabian Kock, the Head of Environmental Technologies Air at DNV, a Silver Sponsor of the conference which is being held in its home city of Hamburg.
In his DNV role Dr. Kock leads the section responsible for environmental certification within the maritime sector of marine diesel engines, marine exhaust gas aftertreatment systems — such as SCR catalysts and scrubbers — as well as the assessment and certification of ship energy efficiency.
In addition, he is a technical advisor to the German Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport, providing expert guidance on emissions to air from international shipping within the framework of the International Maritime Organization.
His keynote session - LNG Operations Uncovered: The Methane Challenge in FuelEU Maritime - covers methane slip measurement, emissions monitoring, and practical implementation for LNG-fuelled vessels.
FuelEU Maritime aims to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) intensity in shipping by promoting renewable and low-carbon fuels, and the first FuelEU Maritime reporting period began in 2025, including the GHG impact of methane slip emissions.
Methane slip must also be reported under the EU MRV regulation which, since the start of 2026, now falls within the scope of the EU ETS. Shipping companies now need to surrender allowances not only for CO₂ emissions but also for methane and nitrous oxide.
The session is scheduled for the start of the second day of the PFF conference, the longest-running technical conference in the shipping sector, being held 8-10 December at the Empire Riverside Hotel near Hamburg’s port on the River Elbe.
