Steering and station keeping controls

Volvo Penta’s IPS system includes a joystick controller which controls the vessel by moving the stick in the appropriate direction, for ease of docking and other low-speed manoeuvres.

This can be linked to a dynamic positioning system to maintain heading and keep station in a limited area. Twin high-precision GPS receivers determine the boat’s position and heading, with custom software to transforms the data into steering angles, gear shifts and throttle positions to keep the boat still.

IPS systems further include Volvo Pentas’s EMS 2 engine control system, which regulates fuel injection timing and pressure. It controls the unit injectors, one per cylinder, which operate up to 2000 bar for optimum combustion.
