Senior German policy officer will provide invaluable insights

Mundt

The sole focus of the 2026 Propulsion & Future Fuels Conference’s opening Keynote Panel discussion – potential IMO global shipping emission changes confirmed at MEPC 85 – will benefit from the valued additional expertise of Dipl.-Ing Torsten Mundt.

A senior policy officer at the German Federal Ministry of Transport, Mundt is responsible for technical issues under MARPOL Annex VI of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), focusing on greenhouse gas and air pollutant reduction in maritime transport.

He is also involved with the Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) and other EU bodies, and is the head of Germany’s delegation to the IMO Sub-Committee on Pollution Prevention and Response (PPR).

As previously announced, this year’s Propulsion & Future Fuels Conference in Hamburg was postponed to 8-10 December to follow on from the meeting of the IMO’s Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) from 30 November to 3 December, with the committee’s Second Extraordinary Session scheduled for 4 December.

Whatever emerges from the MEPC meeting will be of significant interest to the global maritime leaders gathered in Hamburg, and could include adoption of a new Emission Control Area (ECA) in the North-East Atlantic with stricter vessel emission limits on Nox, Sox and particulate matter (PM) taking effect in 2028.

Joining Torsten Mundt in assessing the possible effects of MEPC regulations will be conference Chairman Lars Robert Pedersen, the Deputy Secretary General of BIMCO who will first deliver a Keynote Address – IMO Development Update & Mid Term Measures – before joining the panel discussion.

This will be moderated by Markus Munz, Managing Director of VDMA Large Engines, and will also include Wolfram Gunterman, Director of Regulatory Affairs at Hapag-Lloyd AG, alongside other speakers who will be announced in due course.
