Wärtsilä has announced that it will launch its new WTT-40 transverse thruster at the Seatrade Cruise Global convention in Fort Lauderdale, USA.

The new transverse thruster features a 400kW power level and a 3400mm diameter controllable pitch propeller.

Arto Lehtinen, vice president of propulsion at Wärtsilä Marine Solutions, said: "The addition of the WTT-40 to our thruster portfolio represents an important enhancement of Wärtsilä's strong offering to the cruise and offshore sectors.”

“Our unique position as a total solutions provider creates significant time and cost saving benefits for both ship owners and yards.”

The W11-40 and other systems in the new WTT range will aim to address customer needs for high power transverse thrusters.

It is intended for various vessel types, notably cruise ships, large offshore support vessels (OSVs) and offshore construction vessels (OCVs).

Due to its maximum power of 4000kW Wärtsilä believe that shipyards and cruise vessel designers can often utilise three WTT-40 thrusters instead of four smaller ones.

The can then create a more efficient vessel design with less space required for the transverse thrusters.

Wärtsilä’s WTT-40 complies with the US Environmental Protection Agency’s VGP2013 regulations.

The first WTT-40s have already been ordered and are scheduled for delivery this year.

The Seatrade Cruise Global convention at Fort Lauderdale will take place in Florida from 14-17 March 2016, Wärtsilä will be at stand number 2729.
