Schottel has expanded its propulsion portfolio with the launch of the PumpJet Submersible SPJ-S, a compact auxiliary thruster designed for manned and unmanned underwater vehicles operating in demanding civil and military environments.

Developed for applications requiring precise manoeuvrability, high availability and compact installation, the electrically driven system is based on the company’s established PumpJet technology and incorporates a specially designed pressure compensation system for deepwater operations.

The pressure compensation arrangement equalises hydrostatic pressure at the seals, supporting reliable operation at significant depths. Thrust can be continuously adjusted through 360 degrees, providing underwater platforms with precise directional control and positioning capabilities in confined waters and challenging operating conditions.

The electric impeller eliminates the need for a gearbox, supporting smooth and low-noise operation, an important consideration for sensitive underwater missions.

Unlike retractable auxiliary propulsion systems, the SPJ-S is immediately available without requiring deployment procedures. Its flush-mounted installation also avoids increasing hydrodynamic resistance or introducing protruding external components that could be vulnerable to damage.

The robust construction is designed to withstand seabed contact and allows controlled bottoming, extending its potential use in shallow waters and demanding subsea environments.

Schottel has designed the system for integration within a platform’s outer hull, making it suitable for a range of underwater vessels, from extra large unmanned underwater vehicles to conventional submarines.

Beyond providing additional manoeuvring capability, the SPJ-S can function as a take-home propulsion system, helping an underwater platform retain control and mobility following failure of its main propulsion system.

The new thruster is available in three sizes, covering an approximate power range of 50 to 990 kW.
