LNG leads surge for alternative fuels

The European Commission wants to expand the use of LNG to avoid gas supply disruption

The demand for alternative-fuelled vessels is soaring, with LNG emerging as the leading fuel choice, according to new data from DNV’s Alternative Fuels Insights platform

In 2024 the maritime industry saw a significant boost, with 515 alternative-fuel vessels ordered – a 38% year-on-year increase from the previous year.

LNG remained the dominant fuel choice for these vessels, comprising 67% of orders and a total of 641 vessels by the end of 2024.
