    Bangladesh commits to ratify the Hong Kong Convention

    Bangladesh has pledged to ratify the International Maritime Organisation’s (IMO) Hong Kong Convention (HKC), the ship recycling treaty, within the next few weeks, which is expected to allow the HKC to finally enter into force.  

  • Dr Martin Kröger of the German Shipowners’ Association (VDR) welcomed the provisional agreement, but noted that international market-based measures from the IMO would have been preferable.

    EU Parliament decides on shipping’s position in ETS

    On Wednesday 22 June, the EU Parliament adopted its position on some key EU laws that are part of the “Fit for 55 in 2030 package” - the EU’s plan to cut GHG emissions by at least 55% by 2030 compared to 1990 levels, and to be net-zero by 2050.

  • The stakeholders hope to reduce the current cost differential between synthetic and other alternative fuels and conventional fuels.

    European shipowners and fuel suppliers (ECSA, EWABA, eFuel Alliance, the Advanced Biofuels Coalition and GoodFuels) have called for amendments to the EU’s FuelEU Maritime proposal to ensure that fuels suppliers are responsible for making cleaner fuels available in sufficient quantities.

  • The decision to apply the polluter-pays principle is consistent with the original ETS, which was designed to abate GHG emissions from heavy industry and power generation.

    European Green Deal spells more hurdles for shipping

    The IMO’s hard-won 2018 agreement on shipping’s greenhouse gas reduction targets for 2030 and 2050 have now been superseded by more ambitious requirements set forth in last December’s European Green Deal. Once again, the European Commission has forced shipping’s hand, risking the creation of separate emissions regimes in different geographies.
