Ammonia Methanol LNG BioFuel & Clean Diese Nuclear
Using an abundant, if toxic, resource to power the maritime fleet. A mature future fuel already in use - but will it become dominant? LNG is currently the most popular lower carbon fuel, but with bio and e-LNG it could move beyond its current transition fuel status supported by extensive existing infrastructure. Numerous NGOs protested against the IMO earlier this year putting biofuels in its Global Fuel Standard, but the “fuel versus food” debate seems to have been solved by deriving fuels from waste. Technically the cleanest possible fuel source available to the maritime world and one that has the longest history, dating back to the 1950s. Why is it not in common, non-military use?

WILL EU SHIP RECYCLING REVIEW MEAN CHANGES?

    2024-02-19T12:42:00

The results of the European Commission’s review of its Ship Recycling Regulations are expected to be published in Q2 2024. What it says and what changes may materialise remain to be seen. More to the point, the coming into effect of the Hong Kong Convention and an apparent change of heart by the EU in a review of its Waste Shipment regulation could see EU-flagged ships being broken quite legally in Asian yards.

As attention begins to focus on the results of the European Commission’s review of its Ship Recycling Regulations, which are expected to be published in Q2 2024, BIMCO has jointly submitted a paper ahead of the 81st Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) meeting on 18-22 March 2024, together with Bangladesh, India, Norway, Pakistan and the ICS. The paper underlines the need to resolve potential conflicting requirements between the Hong Kong Convention and the Basel Convention which are leading to inconsistent regional interpretations.
