J-Eng tests small bore powerhouse

Japan Engine Corp (J-Eng) has completed the shop test of its debut ten-cylinder, 500mm bore engine, destined for a roro vessel under construction for Fujitrans Corporation at Mitsubishi Heavy Industries’ Shimonoseki shipyard.

The new engine is designed for vessels with high power demand and limited engine room height

The 10UEC50LSE-Eco-B1 engine will be delivered to the shipyard on 29 November. It is the first 10-cylinder engine in the 500mm bore class which is a core part of J-Eng’s range, meeting the ship owner’s demands of high output but with limited engine room height – thus requiring a larger number of relatively small bore cylinders.

The company noted that it expected a strong uptake in this engine type among roro vessels, as other engine manufacturers “have no comparable line-up”.

J-Eng was created when Mitsubishi Heavy Industries’ two-stroke engine business merged with that of licensee Kobe Steel earlier this year. The company noted that its strong manufacturing experience, gained from being the only two-stroke licensor that both designs and manufactures its engines, contributed to the rapid development of the new engine.
