ClassNK has held an environmental seminar on the latest trends and practical operation of wind-assisted propulsion systems, sponsored by K Line, Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL), MOL Techno-Trade and Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (NYK).

As the shipping industry works to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, wind-assisted propulsion systems (WAPS) are gaining momentum by harnessing wind power to supplement ship propulsion, reduce fuel consumption and lower emissions. With installations expanding, operational experience and performance evaluation are becoming increasingly important.

The seminar brought together 160 participants from shipping companies, shipbuilders, marine equipment manufacturers and other organisations to exchange knowledge on WAPS adoption, operation and performance.

The programme opened with a presentation from Japan’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism on carbon neutrality trends in the maritime sector. The International Windship Association outlined international developments in wind propulsion, while shipping companies shared their experiences with WAPS installation and operation. ClassNK also presented its activities related to the technology.

Presentations covered K Line’s Seawing Project, the Wind Challenger Project and NYK’s progress in wind-assisted propulsion, alongside wider industry developments and ClassNK initiatives.

The event concluded with a panel discussion featuring five industry experts, who examined operational challenges, methods for evaluating system performance and the future outlook for practical WAPS implementation.
