Small cats offer offshore stability
The Dutch Veka Group has designed a series of small catamarans for the offshore industry, intended for crew tendering and with the ability to carry supplies in three 10ft containers. The first, destined for an offshore wind farm, was scheduled for delivery in September.
The catamaran hull was designed for low resistance, light weight, stability and a smooth ride. The accommodation is designed to add to the strength of the hull structure, representing a weight saving of around 20% compared with a conventional catamaran, with a corresponding reduction in fuel consumption. The structural strength is sufficient to allow fitment of a crane, for cargo or ROV operations.
All-round fendering and waterjet propulsion mean that the catamarans can safely hold their position without the need for a DP system.
The first example is 19.4m long, while the design has been completed for a 24m version.
