A consortium of ship operators and yards has been awarded approval in principle from both ABS and ClassNK for two types of low-pressure liquefied CO2 (LCO2) carriers.
The AiP was granted during Gastech 2024 to Mitsui O.S.K Lines, K Line, NYK Line, Mitsui & Co, Mitsubishi Corporation, Mitsubishi Shipbuilding, and Nihon Shipyard – a joint venture between Imabari Shipbuilding and Japan Marine United Corporation.
Demand for LCO2 carriers is set to rise alongside various carbon dioxide capture and storage (CCS) projects in Japan.
Recently, Mitsubishi Shipbuilding, Nihon Shipyard, Mitsui & Co., and Mitsubishi Corporation have collaborated to standardise LCO2 carriers for multiple projects, aiming to create a consistent supply chain within Japan.
The newly certified LCO2 carriers consist of a low-pressure type 50,000m³ class vessel and a 23,000m³ class vessel, designed for long-distance ocean transportation.
The AiPs address the use of alternative cargo tank materials, moving away from the previously considered nickel steel. Additionally, the critical post-welding heat treatment process may be omitted through the engineering critical assessment approach, streamlining cargo tank manufacturing and supporting the advancement of CCS initiatives.
