Non-hazardous alkali solution for scrubbers launched

Two magnesium producers have announced plans to distribute a non-hazardous magnesium hydroxide alternative to traditional alkalis for use in exhaust gas cleaning systems.

Two magnesium product producers Nedmag and TIMAB Magnesium are collaborating to supply a non-hazardous product for use in scrubbers, a magnesium hydroxide product named MH53S MARE.

MH53S MARE combines extremely high purity with best-in-class stability properties. Unlike traditional alkalis used in scrubber installations, MH53S MARE is a non-hazardous material, which offers significant crew safety advantages.

The product has been successfully used for several years on board several vessels. Nedmag and TIMAB Magnesium are planning to increase the supply of the product to the marine industry to meet increased demand ahead of the introduction of the IMO’s 2020 sulphur cap. Nedmag has already doubled production capacity in 2018, and is planning to expand production further.

TIMAB Magnesium will take responsibility for the distribution of MH53S MARE to the maritime industry, while Nedmag will provide technical support to the development of the solution.
