Canada’s federal government is ready to invest C$2.5bn (US$1.84bn) into the smaller classes of vessel deployed by the Coast Guard. The programme for the modernisation of this sector of the fleet provides for up to 61 craft and vessels of various types to serve in shallow coastal waters, rivers and inland lakes that are inaccessible to larger ships.
