Finland considering supporting domestic shipbuilding industry

Following the recent announcement by STX Europe that over 400 jobs would be axed from its Turku operations in Finland, the Finnish government said that it would consider measures to help the country's struggling shipbuilding industry.

“We have to secure the future of the shipping industry, we need a survival strategy that will include various measures,” Finnish minister of economic affairs, Mauri Pekkarinen said. He went on to say that the government would spend several weeks coming up with a plan but did not specify how much money the government would pledge.

One working group suggested that the government introduce subsidies, loans and guarantees as well as other means of financing. The government was also recommended to pour more money into research and development work.
