First underwater seal repair

01 Feb 2000

Belgian underwater repair specialist Hydrex has carried out the first underwater repair to a lip-type sterntube seal.

Having successfully developed techniques for underwater repairs to face-type seals, the company has been testing a variety of methods for repairing lip seals over the past year. The first order came in November from a regular client who needed repairs to the sterntube seal on a 27,470g bulk carrier.

The repair was carried out in a matter of hours at a berth in Antwerp. An oil boom was positioned round the stern area to prevent pollution in the event of any leakage. The ship shifted berth the same night and no leakage was observed. Daily monitoring throughout the following week, while the ship sailed to Spain, confirmed that the repair had been successful.
