Caterpillar Marine Power Systems has launched a new marine dual fuel engine, the MaK M 46 DF, rated at 900kW/cylinder at 500rpm and 514rpm in diesel and gas modes, available in an in-line or V-configuration.

The engine is currently being tested at Caterpillar’s medium-speed engine facility in Rostock, Germany, with deliveries of the first production examples expected in 2014.

The M 46 DF, with bore of 460mm and stroke of 610mm, is intended for electric drive and mechanical propulsion systems. It has been designed with the capability to switch between LNG, MDO or HFO during operation, and is claimed to offer industry- leading efficiency in gas mode. Fuel consumption is claimed to be the lowest in its class, and with IMO Tier III and EPA Tier 4 compliance in gas mode it is intended for operation in all areas, including ECAs.

The footprint is the same as the M 43 C engine, on which it has been based, so retrofitting to ships with M 43 C engines is possible.

“We’re pleased to introduce this reliable, safe and efficient propulsion engine for the commercial marine market,” says Bob Hallengren, Caterpillar Marine Power Systems product manager. “Our customers want a fuel-efficient, sustainable propulsion product with operational flexibility for both IMO and EPA regulated waters and we’re aiming to exceed their expectations with the M 46 DF engine.”

“It was important for us that M 46 DF and M 43 C share the same footprint features, and the same system interfaces. The M 46 DF was designed to provide operators with industry-leading thermal efficiency for lowest total cost of operation,” says Detlef Kirste, MaK product definition manager. “The engine offers optimised load response and load stability in addition to numerous support features, such as remote monitoring and engine system diagnostics, helping engine operators with their daily service and maintenance work. Our target was to keep the typical MaK marine engine attributes like reliability, safety and efficiency while striving for an engine design that is easy to service and maintain.”

The M 46 DF will be manufactured in Rostock, Germany and distributed and sold through Caterpillar’s MaK dealer network.
