MAN power for Turkish-built asphalt ship

22 Feb 2012

MAN Diesel & Turbo reports that its medium speed engines have been selected to power a new 7,000dwt asphalt and oil product tanker for Spanish shipping company Empresa Naviera Elcano, to be built in Turkey.

Two medium-speed MAN L27/38 engines will form the core of the propulsion package that includes an Alphatronic 2000 propulsion control system, a MAN Alpha VBS Mk 5 CP propeller, and a double-reduction gearbox with multiple PTO clutches operating at 1,200kW at 1200 rpm. The 6-cylinder main engines, rated for 2,040kW at 800rpm, will be built at the MAN Diesel & Turbo facility in Frederikshavn, Denmark. Ship speed will be 14 knots at 80% MCR.

The Elcano vessel, to be constructed at the Sedef shipyard, will be of 110m length oa, 10.6m breadth and 6.9m design draught.

MAN says that the L27/38 engine is characterised by its robustness and heavy-duty propulsion and manoeuvring performance, operating efficiently over the entire load range, with fast load response and quick acceleration. The L27/38 is claimed to be virtually smokeless at idling, part-load and full-load, is optimised for high-torque layout, and emits low levels of NOx while minimising fuel oil consumption.
