MAN Diesel & Turbo says that the Weihai Haida Ferry Company, operating in NE China, has placed an order for a 2,200-passenger/1,100 lane-metre ro-pax ferry featuring a twin-screw medium speed propulsion package.

The operator serves a route between the cities of Weihai and Dalian on opposite sides of the Bohai strait in NE China. The route is currently operated by two ro-pax ferries, the Xin Shen Shen and Shen Shen 1. The new ship will be replacing the former vessel in the fleet, and will be capable of carrying its 2,200 passengers at a design speed of 18 knots.

The ship will be built at the local Huanghai shipyard and will be named Shen Shen 2. It will feature a twin-screw propulsion plant comprising two IMO Tier-II compliant MAN 9L32/40 four-stroke engines manufactured at MAN Diesel & Turbo’s works in Augsburg, Germany. The engines will drive through two Renk single-reduction gearboxes with PTO shafts to drive alternators, and two MAN CP propellers of high efficiency Alpha VBS1020 Mk5 type. An Alphatronic 2000 propulsion control system will be supplied as part of the package, and MAN Diesel & Turbo Frederikshavn will provide support with integration of the full propulsion package. The order is rounded off by an engine spare parts arrangement with MAN PrimeServ, the company’s after-sales division.

Although Weihai Haida is a new customer for MAN, the engine designer has enjoyed a long-term relationship with Huanghai shipyard, that has seen the construction of eight ro-pax ferries with MAN four-stroke propulsion systems to date. The shipyard has also ordered 34 MAN Diesel & Turbo license-built, two-stroke engines.

According to MAN, the impetus for the new ferry order comes from an increase in regional tourism, with Weihai and its hinterland attracting growing numbers of visitors from northern China, especially from around the Dalian area.
