Mein Schiff 4 under build in Turku. Two more to come as Meyer agrees yard take-over

Leading German cruise ship builder Meyer Werft said Monday it had agreed to take over a 70% share in STX Europe’s Turku shipyard and also revealed that Hamburg-based TUI Cruises would be ordering two further ships in its Mein Schiff series at the Turku yard, reports Tom Todd.

Meyer Werft announced it will take control of the operational management at Turku, where 1,300 people are currently working. It will be renamed Meyer Turku Shipyard. Meyer also said TUI Cruises, a joint venture of TUI and RCCL, would order Mein Schiff 5 and 6 at the Turku yard. No technical details of these ships were given.

Mein Schiff 4 is currently being built at Turku for delivery in spring next year and the 99,700gt Mein Schiff 3 has just been delivered by Turku to TUI. There have been reports that two newbuilding orders were linked with the Meyer-Finland talks.

Meyer Werft’s Jan Meyer, who has headed the long discussions with the Finnish Government this year about Turku said the acquisition would “strengthen all locations equally” a reference not only to Turku but also to Meyer’s main building location in Papenburg and its inland cruise ship subsidiary Neptun in Rostock-Warnemuende.

He also said it would have “positive effects for customers in terms of a high standard of flexibility” and mean a strengthening of joint efforts by Papenburg and Turku in the research and development sector as well as overall positive synergies.

Jan Meyer stressed that personnel cuts in Germany or Finland “are not an issue”. The possibility of people losing jobs if the deal went ahead has concerned Meyer work forces in Germany.

Turku Shipyard, which builds post-Panamax class cruise vessels, is one of the biggest and most modern yards in Europe. It covers an area of 144 hectares and boasts a new building dock measuring 365 x 80m.
