German shipbuilder Meyer Werft and the Finnish government have finalised the purchase of the share capital of STX Finland Oy from STX Europe Ltd.

The new company, Meyer Turku Oy, will now proceed with the order of two new cruise ships for Germany’s TUI Cruises, which are due for delivery in 2016 and 2017.

These ships are sister ships to Mein Schiff 3 and Mein Schiff 4 which are due for delivery to TUI in May 2015. Furthermore, there are another two options on the table due for delivery in 2018 and 2019.

“We now have the great chance to make the Turku yard strong again. It will not be easy – the competition in our market remains intense,” said Dr Jan Meyer, CEO, Meyer Werft, who will now take up the position of chief executive officer at Meyer Turku also.

Dr Meyer added: “In addition there is a lot of potential in learning from each other for the benefit of all our yards in Papenburg, Warnemünde and Turku. We just have to work hard on it and constantly improve our productivity. This is the only way to ensure that we can continue the great legacy of Turku yard for many years to come.”

The Turku shipyard is capable of building all types of vessels but will focus on cruise ships, ferries and special builds.
