More power for 34DF

Wärtsilä has announced a higher-output version of its dual fuel four-stroke 34DF engine, for which lower fuel consumption and improved environmental performance are also claimed.

According to Wärtsilä, the 34DF has achieved a leading position in the offshore support vessel market, with additional references in tugs, ferries, ro-ro, ro-pax and workboats. The upgraded version increases efficiency in both liquid and gas operating modes. The extra power means that the engine now achieves up to 500kW/cylinder, giving the 34DF a power output coverage of 2.9MW to 8MW. In addition to the increase in power, fuel economy is enhanced, especially in liquid fuel mode. The company points out that in gas mode the 34DF meets IMO Tier III NOx limits without the need for secondary purification systems, with notable reductions in SOx, CO2 and smoke emissions,

"The Wärtsilä 34DF engine has been a popular choice of ship owners, operators, and yards for a long time already, and this next generation version will certainly enhance its popularity. By improving both the power and fuel efficiency, we aim to maintain the leading position that we have in gas engine technology and as a gas engine manufacturer. It is also important to point out that the environmental performance of the Wärtsilä 34DF is already excellent, and by lowering the fuel consumption we are also lowering the exhaust emissions even further," said Giulio Tirelli, director, Wärtsilä Ship Power, 4-stroke portfolio and applications.
