P&O Cruise order for Fincantieri

01 Jun 2011

Fincantieri has announced an order from US cruise operator Carnival to build a new 141,000gt cruise ship with 3,611 passenger capacity for Carnival’s British brand P&O Cruises.

The new ship, which Fincantieri says is yet to be named, is due to enter service in March 2015, and is set to be the flagship of P&O Cruises fleet, as well as being the largest ship to be built for the British market. It will be the 60th cruise ship built by Fincantieri since 1990, and the 53rd for the various Carnival brands.

As well as a high level of technology, Fincantieri says the ship will feature a stylish and innovative design and include an unprecedented range of passenger facilities and entertainment on board, which the yard says are intended to appeal to “highly discriminating customers from one of the world’s most dynamic markets.”

Commenting on the announcement of the new order, Fincantieri CEO, Giuseppe Bono, said: “This order shows that the company, even in a difficult moment as today, is resolutely continuing its commitment in a particularly depressed market in order to gain whatever orders there might be, thus holding on to its position as world leader.”

Chairman and CEO of Canival group, Micky Arison, commented: “P&O Cruises is Britain’s number one cruise operator, synonymous with high quality holidays that celebrate its rich British heritage. The UK continues to be a key growth market for Carnival and innovative vessels such as this new P&O Cruises ship – targeted specifically to British clientele – underscore our commitment to expanding this important cruise region.”
