Wärtsilä is to introduce a new series of steerable and transverse thrusters, known as the Wärtsilä Steerable Thruster (WST) and Wärtsilä Transverse Thruster (WTT) series, which will replace existing products in the portfolio.

The WST series replaces the current Modular Thruster and Compact Thruster series, while the new WTT replaces the current range of transverse thrusters. Wärtsilä says that the new products have been developed in response to market demands for higher efficiency and a wider power range.

Wärtsilä's Propulsion R&D began development of the new series in 2011, using numerical simulation tools. The first product to enter the pilot phase is a 4,500kW under water (de)-mountable steerable thruster, the WST-45-U. Two more products, the WST-14 and the WTT-11, are scheduled to begin their pilot phase before the end of this year. Wärtsilä will continue the introduction of different sizes of thrusters in the coming years based on market requirements and customer priorities.

The WST-45-U is designed mainly for the offshore market; while the WST-14 is intended for tugs up to 45t bollard pull, inland waterway vessels, and for river/sea going cargo ships. This thruster is compatible with both medium speed and high speed (1,800rpm) diesel engines. The WTT-11 is a 1,100kW tunnel thruster designed primarily for merchant cargo vessels.

The WST and WTT ranges come with new features including an increased power range, an 8° tilted propeller gearbox, and a new nozzle for offshore drilling and tug boat applications. The new nozzle offers improved performance and a high level of system integration. The tunnel thrusters are more compact and more efficient than earlier versions.

The new products are even more efficient and reliable than earlier, as well as being lighter and easier to install," said Arto Lehtinen, vice president propulsion, Wärtsilä Ship Power.
