Becker Marine Systems’ hybrid-power LNG barge ‘Hummel’ is to serve Hamburg’s cruise ship market after completing technical trials successfully.

All five of the vessel’s generator sets were recently subjected to class acceptance tests by Bureau Veritas, under a variety of load impacts and spikes. The overall load transfer of 7.5MW was achieved well within the two minutes specified by the society. Hummel’s gas motors were also tested.

The barge was launched in Komárno, Slovakia at the beginning of September 2014 and was christened following successful passage to Hamburg. It will begin supplying cruise ships next month.

“The overall LNG hybrid barge system with gas motors is an impressive technical achievement. The trials were also a milestone for classification,“ said Hans Gätjens, vice president marine at Bureau Veritas, responsible for the Central Europe region.
