Damen dredge pumps and valves are usually used for hopper dredgers or cutter suction dredgers, but more recently deliveries have been made for a more exotic purpose - remote operated deep sea mining vehicles.

These deep sea mining vehicles, also called Seafloor Production Tools (SPTs), have been manufactured by UK based Soil Machine Dynamics (SMD), which has designed and built three SPTs, each for a specific task.

The first machine, the auxiliary cutter, Damen delivered an electrically driven dredge pump type BP45-1100 for this machine, plus a number of dredge valves.

Damen also delivered another dredge pump and valve set for the second machine, a bulk cutter.

For the third collecting machine, Damen delivered a customised cutter unit, three electrically driven dredge pumps type E-BP2320 and a number of dredge valves.

The three SPTs were shipped to a test site in Oman in February, where the systems will undergo wet testing. The first mining operations are scheduled for 2018, when the deep sea mining vehicles will go into operation on Nautilus’ Solwara 1 copper-gold mining project in Papua New Guinea.

This delivery cements the long-standing cooperation between SMD and Damen, which spans almost a decade. The engineering teams of both companies work closely together integrating Damen dredge pumps in SMD trenchers.

These high-tech trenchers are used for preparing the seabed before laying cables or gas pipe lines. The Damen engineering team adds its dredge pump and dredge pipe routing knowledge to SMD’s ROV expertise.
