NYK confirms order for WinGD VCR technology on DF coal carriers

'Hokuriku Maru' will be used to transport steaming coal from Australia and Indonesia

Japanese ship owner NYK Line has confirmed that it has selected WinGD’s new variable compression ration (VCR) technology for dual-fuel X62DF engines for two dual-fuel coal carriers. The vessels will be among the first to feature WinGD’s cutting-edge combustion optimisation technology, which is expected to lead to significant fuel efficiency savings in gas mode at part and low load operation and diesel mode across the load range.

The VCR system will be installed on two large LNG-fuelled coal carriers to be built at Oshima Shipbuilding. The vessels are scheduled to be delivered by the end of 2025. NYK claims that the order will be the first time that a VCR system has been installed on vessels.
