Alfa Laval expects to submit its type approval application for the PureBallast 3.1 ballast water management system to the US Coast Guard (USCG) within weeks after completing testing at DHI’s laboratory in Denmark.

The UV-filtration system was tested using the same hardware, power consumption and flow as the already IMO-approved version of the system. Testing employed the USCG-allowed CMFDA/FDA (vital stain) sampling method.
Alfa Laval will now compile its USCG type approval application, including the CMFDA/FDA test results for PureBallast 3.1, for submission to the USCG within the coming weeks.
“PureBallast has achieved high-performance results without any change to its components or system design,” said Anders Lindmark, general manager, business centre PureBallast. “The tests show that PureBallast provides reliable biological disinfection at full flow, whether by IMO or US Coast Guard standards.”
