Guidelines clear the way for ammonia

A JDP will study using ammonia as a marine fuel in Singapore

A coalition led by Belgium’s Federal Public Service Mobility and Transport, working with Lloyd’s Register and EXMAR, has completed interim guidelines that open the door for gas carriers to use their own ammonia cargo as fuel

The guidelines follow an amendment secured more than two years ago to the IGC Code, which had previously barred ammonia consumption as fuel on certified carriers.

Ammonia, long viewed as a promising zero-carbon option, gains a regulatory pathway through the new guidance, which aims to balance operational flexibility with strict safety measures.
