Using an abundant, if toxic, resource to power the maritime fleet. A mature future fuel already in use - but will it become dominant? LNG is currently the most popular lower carbon fuel, but with bio and e-LNG it could move beyond its current transition fuel status supported by extensive existing infrastructure. Numerous NGOs protested against the IMO earlier this year putting biofuels in its Global Fuel Standard, but the “fuel versus food” debate seems to have been solved by deriving fuels from waste. WinGD unveils first NH3 marine engine
WinGD has marked a major milestone in maritime decarbonisation, reportedly becoming the first engine designer to bring an ammonia-fuelled two-stroke engine to market
The X52DF-A engine has been delivered and installed on a 46,000m³ LPG/ammonia carrier being built for EXMAR, making it the first ammonia-fuelled gas carrier set to enter commercial service.
The 52-bore engine was manufactured by HD Hyundai Heavy Industries’ Engine & Machinery Business Unit and installed on the first of four sister vessels under construction at HD Hyundai Mipo in South Korea.
