An innovative ammonia-fuelled Newcastlemax bulker design from Anglo-Eastern Technical Services (AETS) has been granted Approval in Principle (AIP) by ABS.
The dual-fuel vessel design utilises deck-mounted IMO Type C tanks located under the accommodation block on each side of the vessel. The deck-mounted fuel tank solution minimises the impact of the system upon the Newcastlemax vessel’s cargo capacity. ABS notes that the solution involves no reduction in cargo space.
The ammonia-fuelled design, which The Motorship understands includes a dual-fuel 2-stroke engine capable of operating on ammonia fuel, has been developed with one eye upon potential retrofits to existing vessels, as well as ammonia-fuelled and ammonia-ready newbuildings.
The Motorship notes that MAN Energy Solutions is expecting to make a dual-fuel, two-stroke ammonia engine commercially available for large-scale ocean-going ships by 2024, followed by a retrofit package by 2025. WinGD is also developing a dual-fuel solution capable of operating on ammonia for modern engines in its portfolio.

The ABS Guide for Ammonia-Fueled Vessels sets out Classification design criteria for the arrangements, construction, installation and survey of machinery, equipment and systems for vessels operating with ammonia as fuel to minimise risks to the vessel, crew and the environment.
