As the shipping industry strives to reduce its environmental impact, the potential of ammonia as fuel in shipping has emerged as a potential low-carbon option with promising characteristics.

But use of ammonia to fuel ships provokes both storage and bunkering infrastructure challenges. In addition, safe and efficient ammonia handling requires specialised equipment and facilities which are currently limited in the shipping industry.*

This year’s Propulsion and Future Fuels conference, being held in Hamburg from 25-27 November, will consider the latest updates in the use of this technology.

One of the speakers in the session will be Dr. Andreas Schmid, Senior Advisor, Research and Development at WinGD, the company developing propulsion energy systems for decarbonization.

Andreas has a degree in Mechanical Engineering from The Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) in Zurich. He completed his PhD on Automotive Sprays in 2012 and has over 10 years of international experience in researching, developing and validating engine technologies.

Andreas joined WinGD in 2011 as a Spray and Combustion Research Scientist before taking over the lead of the Future Technologies team in 2016. He was responsible for the coordination of collaborative research with a focus on the development of measurement technologies, piston running and for acquiring a better understanding of spray and combustion.

In 2019 Andreas took on the role of General Manager, Technology Development. In this role, he led research and development in the field of future fuels, fuel injection, ignition, tribology as well as emission formation and abatement. From 2024 Andreas took on the role of Senior Advisor, Research and Development.
