ABS has issued an approval in principle (AIP) to Hanwha Ocean for its innovative design of a liquified natural gas (LNG) carrier equipped with an dual-fuel ammonia gas turbine, and featuring a supercritical carbon dioxide (sCO2) power system. The design would be capable of operating without producing carbon emissions.

The Motorship notes Hanwha is currently engaged in a joint development project with the Southwest Research Institute (SwRI) as part of a contract with the US Department of Energy (DOE) to develop sCO₂ gas turbines. The use of recompression closed Brayton cycle technology holds open the possibility of delivering thermodynamic cycle efficiency of above 50% at commercial scale.
