Using an abundant, if toxic, resource to power the maritime fleet. A mature future fuel already in use - but will it become dominant? Numerous NGOs protested against the IMO earlier this year putting biofuels in its Global Fuel Standard, but the “fuel versus food” debate seems to have been solved by deriving fuels from waste. LNG is currently the most popular lower carbon fuel, but with bio and e-LNG it could move beyond its current transition fuel status supported by extensive existing infrastructure. Long-term operational performance confirmed for B24 blend
The Global Centre for Maritime Decarbonisation and NYK have confirmed positive results for a six-month trial of a B24 FAME blend on a pure car and truck carrier.
Launched in 2024, a six-month trial of B24 FAME blended with VLSFO on a 25-year-old pure car and truck carrier (PCTC) confirmed main engines and gensets, which ran on B24 for 2,888 and 1,813 hours respectively, performed comparably to when they operated on VLSFO.
