Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME) has delivered the first systems allowing complete reliquefaction of LNG cargo boil-off for use in gas carriers’ dual-fuel engines.

The system, which can also recover all boil-off and return it as cargo, has already been applied to gas carriers with both high-pressure and low-pressure dual-fuel two-stroke engine technologies, deployed by MAN Diesel & Turbo and WinGD respectively.
DSME said that nine LNG carriers ordered this year will be equipped with the full reliquefaction system. The orders are expected to help ship owners reduce operating costs by a total of nearly KRW8 billion (€6.23 billion) annually.
The company has been conducting research and development into LNG as marine fuel since the early 2000s and opened its Energy Systems Laboratory in 2015. It has built a total of 41 LNG carriers.
