Japanese shipping company Asahi Tanker has joined the Maritime Battery Forum (MBF).

It is the latest member of the global community dedicated to advancing battery technologies in the maritime sector.

Founded in 1951, Asahi Tanker provides marine transportation services for petroleum and chemical products. In recent years, the company has aligned itself towards the forefront of sustainable shipping, spearheading the development of pure battery-powered and hybrid electric tankers.

In 2022, Asahi Tanker marked a milestone with the delivery of Asahi, the world’s first zero-emission, all-electric tanker. The vessel is powered by a large-capacity lithium-ion battery system supplied by Corvus Energy, enabling operations without emissions of CO₂, NOx, SOx, or particulates.

By joining MBF, Asahi Tanker aligns with an international network of shipowners, suppliers, and stakeholders working to accelerate the uptake of battery solutions across the maritime industry.

Last year, The Motorship reported on the growth in battery capacity at sea, according to data from the MBF, which maintains a register of ships featuring energy storage systems,
