The Port of Hamburg has positioned itself as a frontrunner in maritime decarbonisation, offering comprehensive shore power facilities for cruise vessels—well in advance of the European Union’s mandate requiring such infrastructure from 2030.

Long recognised as a pioneer in this field, Hamburg has invested significantly in shore-side electricity for cruise ships, with wider expansion now underway for inland waterway and sea-going cargo vessels. The use of sustainably generated shore power is already playing a central role in shaping the port’s infrastructure, further cementing its status as a leader in environmental innovation within the European maritime sector.
