The upcoming Motorship Propulsion and Future Fuels conference is opening with a high-level panel to discuss the impact of regulatory changes including FuelEU Maritime regulations. The session will include Ricardo Batista, Policy Officer, EU Commission and member of the Fuel EU Maritime group, on the keynote panel.
The EU Council and the EU Parliament reached a provisional agreement on the FuelEU Maritime decarbonisation initiative in the early hours of 23 March 2023.
Beyond the introduction of requirements for onshore power supply (OPS) for containerships and passenger vessels, the FuelEU Maritime initiative is expected to increase the demand for and consistent use of renewable and low-carbon fuels.
The draft regulations have not yet been approved, but are expected to include mechanisms to encourage early adopters to operate vessels on alternative fuels, such as ammonia and methanol, which would also create stable sources of demand for fuel producers intending to ramp up alternative fuel production.
The 44th Motorship Propulsion and Future Fuels conference will also include dedicated panels looking at technical issues relating to the introduction of alternative-fuelled engines into the maritime market, including senior representatives from across the industry.
