Klüber has launched an environmentally acceptable lubricant for open gears, compliant with the US Vessel General Permit.

Klüber's new EAL is said to offer lubrication and protection for open gears even in ambient temperatures of -30°C

Klüberbio LG 39-701 N is suitable for anchor winches, jack-up systems and other on-board equipment with open drives and in contact with sea water, It is said to offer good low-temperature behaviour, enabling operation of open drives in areas with temperatures down to -30°C.

Special additves reduce wear and extend the components's service life. By spraying the lubricant, consumption can be considerably reduced compared to conventional application methods. The new high-temperature lubricant complies with the requirements of Environmentally Acceptable Lubricants (EAL) as defined in Appendix A of the 2013 Vessel General Permit.

Dirk Fabry, business development manager marine industry, Klüber Lubrication, said: "The high-viscosity base oil of Klüberbio LG 39-701 N comes from renewable resources and is easily biodegradable. Moreover, re-lubrication intervals are extended due to the excellent adhesion and water resistance of the new operational lubricant."

The new grease has already been approved by a leading manufacturer of spray appliances for jack-up systems for the lubrication of support bearings for ice-resistant thrusters, and for the corrosion protection of hubs in fixed-pitch propellers.
