The world’s first large scale renewables-based green LNG project is set to proceed following the expected appointment of Technip Energies as the EPC contractor in early 2024. The project is expected to create the world’s first supply of green LNG for bunkering, with production of low-emission LNG expected to begin in 2027, eventually ramping up to 1m tonnes per year. 

By utilising renewable energy produced from PV plants in the Al Batinah region, the LNG supplied by the plant is expected to have a significantly lower emissions footprint compared with conventional LNG trains. It is unclear what proportion of the plant’s production will be exported, and what proportion will be reserved for LNG bunkers.

Marsa LNG is expected to begin supplying low-emission LNG produced using renewable electricity for LNG bunkers at the Port of Sohar in Oman from 2027.

The project is located close to the Port of Sohar on Oman’s North Al Batinah coast. The project is being developed by Marsa LNG, a joint venture between TotalEnergies and a local subsidiary of Oman’s energy producer OQ. TotalEnergies holds an 80% majority stake in the company, which has been developing the project. 

The project is expected to take around 34 months to complete, with ground expected to be broken on the project by Q3 2024. The first renewable gas from the project is expected to be produced by mid-2027. The overall project is expected to cost around USD1 billion.
