    Japanese Consortium Targets 2026 For First NH3-Fuelled Gas Carrier

    Japan Engine Corporation (J-ENG) has announced that it will provide a low-speed two-stroke dual-fuel engine capable of operating on ammonia for an ammonia-fuelled medium-sized gas carrier, which will be constructed at Nihon Shipyard. A series of contracts relating to the construction of the 40,000 cbm ammonia carrier were signed in December 2023 by J-ENG, Nihon Shipyard Co., Ltd. and ship owner Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (NYK).

    ClassNK awards world’s first AiP for H2-fuelled 2-stroke vessel design

    ClassNK has issued an Approval in Principle (AiP) for a hydrogen-fuelled multi-purpose vessel using Japan Engine’s (J-ENG) large low-speed two-stroke hydrogen-fuelled engine as a main mover. The AiP is the world’s first for a ship equipped with such a large low-speed two-stroke hydrogen-fuelled engine.

    J-ENG To Add NH3 and Conventional 60-Bore Variants To LSH Range

    Japan Engine Corporation (J-ENG) has announced that it plans to develop a successor to its low-speed UEC60LSE design. The development of the UEC60LSH engine will retain the LSH ultrawide rating concept, and is expected to meet very large gas carrier (VLGC) requirements, as well as Capesize bulk carriers, coal carriers and specialist car carriers.

    A Japanese consortium including Japan Engine Corporation (J-ENG), NYK Line, IHI Power Systems and Nihon Shipyard has successfully completed a land-based test for the stable combustion of ammonia as a fuel, using an 80:20 ammonia:natural gas co-firing ratio.
